How to spot particulate filter problems in time

A check engine light, power loss, or signs of clogging can all point to problems with the particulate filter. Here's how to spot it in time, especially if you drive a diesel car.

The particulate filter, also called the DPF, is an important part of modern diesel cars. It helps reduce the emission of harmful particles, but over time it can fill up with soot and ash. When that happens, the car will often start behaving differently, long before the problem becomes so big that you can't keep driving.

Many people only notice the problem when the check engine light comes on, or when the car loses power during acceleration. That's why it can pay to know the early signs, so you can react in time and avoid an expensive filter replacement.

What is a particulate filter (DPF)?

DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter and sits in the car's exhaust system. The filter's job is to capture soot and particles from the engine, so the car pollutes less and meets environmental requirements.

Over time the filter collects more and more soot. That's why it either needs to regenerate automatically while driving or be cleaned if it becomes too clogged.

Signs of DPF problems

If the particulate filter starts to clog up, the car will often give several fairly clear signals:

  • The check engine light or a DPF warning comes on
  • The car loses power and feels sluggish
  • It goes into limp mode to protect the engine
  • Fuel consumption increases
  • The exhaust feels heavier or dirtier than normal

1. The check engine light comes on

One of the most common indicators is that the check engine light comes on, or the car shows an error message on the display. It doesn't always mean the filter is completely clogged, but it's a clear sign that something should be examined.

2. The car loses power

A clogged particulate filter can limit engine performance. You may therefore experience poor acceleration, a lack of pulling power, and a generally sluggish car. If you're also experiencing this together with a warning light, it's a clear sign the car should have fault-finding done.

3. The car goes into limp mode

In some cases the car protects itself by reducing power and limiting speed. This is often called limp mode. It happens to reduce the risk of bigger damage to the engine or exhaust system.

4. Increased fuel consumption

If the filter is partially clogged, the engine has to work harder. That often means the car uses more fuel than normal. It's a symptom many people overlook, because it happens gradually.

5. Smoke or poor exhaust

Although a DPF normally reduces smoke, problems with the particulate filter can lead to darker smoke and signs of impure combustion. It's especially worth reacting to if it comes together with power loss or warning lights.

Why do DPF problems occur?

Most problems are caused by the driving pattern. Many short trips, low speeds for extended periods, and very little motorway driving make it hard for the car to reach the temperature needed to clean the filter automatically.

That's why we often see DPF problems on cars mostly used for city driving. Here the car simply doesn't get the chance to regenerate properly.

What is regeneration?

Regeneration is the car's own way of cleaning the particulate filter. The temperature in the system is raised, so the soot that has collected in the filter is burned away. It typically happens during longer drives at higher speed and stable revs.

If the car rarely gets that kind of drive, regeneration can be interrupted or not start at all. Then the problem grows quietly, until a manual DPF cleaning or further diagnosis becomes necessary.

When should you react?

You should get the car checked if you experience one or more of these symptoms:

  • The check engine light is on
  • The car loses power
  • Fuel consumption is increasing
  • The car goes into limp mode
  • You suspect problems with the exhaust or combustion

The earlier you react, the greater the chance of solving the problem with cleaning or repair, before the filter becomes so clogged that it needs replacing.

What happens if you ignore it?

If DPF problems aren't solved, the filter can become completely clogged. That can lead to reduced engine performance, higher consumption, faults in other systems, and in the worst case damage to the engine or turbo. That's why it's almost always cheaper to react early than to wait.
